The mission of the SciArt Research website:

To focus attention on the intersection of SciArt and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and encourage a spirit of exploration and discovery.

This site includes sections for general information about our organization, a forum for discussion including a section specifically for discussing the role of AI in the SciArt community with both positive and negative perspectives, resources such as articles, videos, and podcasts, information about events, and a contact page.

Exploring the Role of AI in Art

AI can play a significant role in the art world. We wish to explore this role and both the positive and negative influence of AI art.

Positive Perspective – Examples

AI can play a significant role in the art world. It can make it easier for artists to create and exhibit their work, which could lead to a greater diversity of voices and perspectives in the art world ¹. AI can help artists create art faster, cheaper, and with non-conventional skills rather than the formal and intensive art training typically acquired ¹. AI can also create art that is a hybrid of different art forms, such as visual art and music ¹. AI systems that can make complex, highly detailed images or unexpected combinations of elements can lead to new kinds of visual art that make us rethink what is possible ⁵.

Negative Perspective – Examples

According to an article on makeuseof.com, AI-generated art can perpetuate harmful ethnic and gender stereotypes¹. AI generators are programmed to filter out negative representations, but it is impossible to filter out everything. So inevitably, you can end up with AI-generated art that’s offensive and harmful¹. The influence of AI art in the future can play into how much artists get paid, and what type of art is created in the future². Children’s illustrators have raised concerns about the technology on social media. Among them is author and illustrator Rob Biddulph, who says that AI-generated art “is the exact opposite of what I believe art to be”³.

Connecting SciArt and AI

SciArt AI Research supports and fosters active exchange between all disciplines by using the platforms of art to build connections, create shared experiences, spark collaboration, and envision our futures. The aim is to stimulate and cultivate the growth of connections and collaborations across disciplines on a local scale through art exhibits and public events series.

SciArt Community Interactions

The SciArt community actively encourages connectivity and cross-disciplinary approaches needed for the 21st century.

The SciArt community enables science-art interactions globally via a variety of virtual programs both virtually and in real life (IRL). Our members publish and create art installations internationally. SciArt installations incorporate the cutting edge of science and technology-based art, third culture conversation, and STEAM education. SciArt programs engage a growing global community and directly support the creative endeavors of artists, scientists, educators and students worldwide.
